Application Deadlines

Our online Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program has different start dates throughout the year, so you have the flexibility to choose the one that best suits your schedule.

For each cohort, we offer priority application deadlines to help you get a head start on planning for your future. The $85 application fee is waived for applicants who submit by the priority deadlines as well as for those who meet other academic or professional criteria. See application requirements for details.

This program is open to Massachusetts residents only.1 We welcome candidates from a wide range of personal and professional backgrounds, and a bachelor’s degree from a regionally or nationally accredited college or university is required for admission.

Résumé/Curriculum Vitae

There is no work experience requirement for admission, but professional or volunteer experience with children is recommended. You will need to upload a résumé that includes your education and any professional experience and volunteer work.


You will need to submit transcripts from all previously attended colleges and universities where credit was earned toward an undergraduate, graduate, or professional degree. Transcripts for study abroad or transfer programs are not required if the course titles, grades, and credit hours are included on the transcript of the degree-granting institution.

Statement of Purpose

In your statement of purpose, we ask you to elaborate on your reasons for wishing to pursue graduate study at Tufts, including your experiences, inspiring individuals, or events that motivated you to take this path. Your personal statement should be a maximum of 2,500 words, be single-spaced, and should answer the following questions:

  • Why have you decided to become a teacher 1) at this point in time, 2) with elementary-aged students, and 3) focused on STEM?
  • What have you learned from previous experiences (with adolescents, in instructional roles, and with your subject matter) that you can apply to your teaching?

Letters of Recommendation

Three letters of recommendation are required. These letters should collectively address your capacity to accomplish graduate-level studies.

If you are a current Tufts University senior or graduated within the past two years from a Tufts undergraduate program, you are only required to submit two letters of recommendation.

GRE or MTEL Scores (Optional)

If you choose, you may submit scores from the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) or the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL). These scores are optional, but you may include them if you feel they would benefit your application. We encourage candidates to provide scores if they need to balance out gaps in undergraduate performance, subject matter knowledge in STEM subjects, or professional experience.

Those who submit GRE scores should do so electronically using Tufts University school code 3901. Those who decide to take the MTEL should select Tufts University as the institution to receive official scores.

Test waivers are available for current Tufts University undergraduates and those who graduated from Tufts within the past two years.

Proof of English Proficiency (If Applicable)

Applicants whose native language is not English are required to provide scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The Tufts University code is 3901.

Applicants may be waived from providing proof of English proficiency if they satisfy one of the following requirements:

  • They have citizenship in Australia, Canada (except Quebec), Great Britain, Ireland, New Zealand, Guyana, an Anglophone country of Africa, or an English-speaking country of the Caribbean.
  • They earned a college or university degree in the United States or in one of the countries listed above prior to submission of this application.
  • They are currently enrolled as a full-time student in a degree-granting program in the United States or at an English-speaking school in one of the countries listed above. They must have successfully completed two consecutive full-time academic years of college or university work prior to the date of anticipated enrollment at Tufts University.

Personal Interview Conducted via Webcam

An interview via video conference with a faculty member is required for all candidates admitted to the program. After you have completed your application, you will be contacted by the admissions committee to schedule your interview.

Application Fee

The nonrefundable application fee is $85. The following applicants qualify for a waiver:

  • Those who apply by the priority deadline
  • Active-duty US military personnel and US military veterans
  • Current Tufts undergraduate and graduate students
  • Students in Tufts certificate programs applying to a degree program
  • Tufts Plus applicants
  • AmeriCorps and Peace Corps volunteers and alumni
  • City Year and Teach for America Corp members and alumni
  • GEM fellows
  • Institute for Recruitment of Teachers (IRT), the Leadership Alliance, and McNair Scholars
  • Current seniors at NESCAC schools: Amherst College, Bates College, Bowdoin College, Colby College, Connecticut College, Hamilton College, Middlebury College, Trinity College, Wesleyan University, and Williams College
