Why STEM Education Is Our Focus

At the Tufts Department of Education, we view children as nascent scholars. They are naturally curious about how the world works. We believe that the core goal of teaching is not rote learning or standardized testing, but rather recognizing and cultivating the resources and talents that children bring to the classroom.

STEM education is an ideal way to harness students’ curiosity and engenders critical thinking, innovation, and mathematic and scientific literacy in elementary students.

By introducing science, technology, engineering, and math early on, especially in urban schools and communities, our teachers can help bridge the racial, ethnic, and gender gaps that exist in these fields. STEM education matters in more than just the classroom—it can help address the inequities that exist in our larger society.

Tufts’ online MAT program integrates STEM pedagogies throughout the curriculum, and our faculty are continuously engaging in STEM education research and field work.
